From Fear to Hope

Businesses all over the world face common issues related to people (e.g., wage inflation, retention, diversity and inclusion, mental well-being, and skill shortages). We might find few of these in our daily life:

  • The waiters/waitresses who don't exhibit the good services - probably they have a bad day after get yelled by the manager.

  • A long line in groceries store or coffee shop because it has understaff.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic era, employees took sick leaves for at least 14 days. The companies must continued, but they didn't have sufficient team members.

The businesses were financially and operationally impacted. These circumstances were and are real. The uncertainty of what happens in the future can tremble the companies.


Matt Elk, the Senior Director of People Insights in Pfizer, mentioned that with the uncertain situation that can happen, the companies need to do something. Data is a knowledge. It must be collected and transformed into actionable actions that can improve the way business do. Data is collected from various sources: survey results, HR and cross-functions data, or the daily operational data. With the help of platform and technology, we can integrate data and find the connecting dots to gain and share actionable insights for company. With these, they have a goal to drive business growth and productivity.


The journey of analytics is not easy. Matt shared that even for Pfizer, it was complicated initially. Explaining to some parties who do not even care about data, is exhausted. However, this shouldn't make the company slows down just because some people are not ready for it. The company must figure out the "how". Thus, company may conduct training to up-skill the employees. Especially nowadays, every organization is using data and it's critical to everything.


We also do not have to block our mind from technology advancement. With many publications about replacing human's jobs with AI and robotics, it could terrified us. But when it comes to technology customization and the business insights, it's still on humans' hands.


"From fear to hope" - this quote actually explains it all. May we see the future in optimistic way, that the technology must be seen as the tools to help the business grow. May we shape the people's belief that the technology and data is part of the journey to create impact and some breakthroughs. May you have some hopes too in that.
